Momentos antes das cortinas se abrirem, a concentração é total para domar a ansiedade e manter a respiração sob controle. A campainha do teatro soa pela terceira vez e o coração dispara: chegou a hora. O que parecia impossível para o menino de origem simples, que ouvia música no rádio de pilha da mãe, materializou-se como se fosse um prêmio por ter desafiado todos os obstáculos e derrubado barreiras além-fronteiras. Senhores e Senhoras, com vocês, Renan Teodoro de Barros!

Para entender essa trajetória, é preciso voltar à sua infância. Em entrevista ao Jornal da Manhã e ao blog “Marília Sustentável”, por videoconferência, ele falou com orgulho sobre sua origem demonstrando muita gratidão aos pais e a todos que o ajudaram a galgar um degrau após o outro.

E foi na escola que ele teve o primeiro contato com a música e a dança, experiência que lhe transformou completamente: “Desde pequeno, sempre adorei música. Meu pai gosta muito de música, minha mãe é apaixonada por música, por rádio. Então, até hoje, minha mãe e o rádio têm uma relação de amor. Em casa sempre tinha muita música. Lembro que a música como forma de arte expressiva, chegou para mim realmente na escola, no Sagrado”.
Com indisfarçável emoção, ele recordou seu primeiro contato com o coral e as aulas de flauta: “Parte das atividades era ir para as aulas de coral junto com a professora Patrícia Costa, que é uma professora de técnica vocal, de instrumentos. Todos nós, em dado momento da semana, íamos para a aula de coral com a Tia Patrícia. Lembro de chegar lá e achar incrível porque ela ensinou sobre as notas musicais e a gente estava aprendendo a flauta doce. Achei incrível aprender a flauta e a música do Titanic e ‘Ode a Alegria’ que a gente aprendeu na flauta”.
Ele prosseguiu com as memórias: “Fomos aprendendo a cantar, a divisão vocal e assim por diante. Cantamos em missas na Capela do Sagrado e eu achava aquilo incrível porque eu me achava extremamente especial pelo fato de estar participando de uma performance. Era algo que me fazia muito feliz por estar me apresentando na frente de outras pessoas, por mais que naquela época eu fosse uma pessoa muito tímida”.

SONHO AMERICANO
Conforme os anos se passavam, Renan focava em um objetivo ambicioso: “Meu sonho maior sempre foi morar nos Estados Unidos, aquele “Sonho Americano” e pensei qual seria a maneira de fazer isso. Percebi que eu precisava fazer um curso específico para aprender mais sobre essa arte, cantar, dançar, interpretar, que é muito popular fora do Brasil e de uns anos para cá vem sendo popularizada no Brasil, principalmente em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro que têm recebido muitos musicais.”
Ele contou que queria “estudar nos Estados Unidos e foi para isso que eu mudei toda a minha vida. Passei a procurar faculdades de teatro musical porque o Brasil, em si, não tem até onde eu saiba. Existem faculdades de artes cênicas, que é mais a parte de interpretação. O teatro musical é a junção de música, dança e atuação. Ele é como uma faculdade de preparação de atores, porém ela inclui também as matérias principais de música e dança”.

De família de trabalhadores com poucos recursos, Renan Teodoro não se acomodou e foi à luta: “Comecei a trabalhar dando aula de inglês e a juntar meu dinheiro para fazer minha inscrição na faculdade de teatro musical. Pensei em trabalhar bastante e conseguir fazer a inscrição”.

Com um valor razoável poupado, passou à segunda etapa: localizar faculdades no exterior e se informar sobre o processo de inscrição: “Pesquisei no bom e velho amigo Google e fui filtrando: Canadá, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Nova Zelândia e Austrália. Mandei e-mails para todas as faculdades perguntando como fazer inscrição, se aceitavam alunos estrangeiros, como seria a taxa e tudo mais. Por incrível que pareça, eu fui aprovado em todas as faculdades. É algo que me deixa arrepiado. Era algo que sempre foi um sonho tão grande e eu sempre imaginava que estaria tão longe”.
DECEPÇÃO
Obstinado, Renan recordou ter encontrado “uma faculdade nos Estados Unidos que teria um preço mais razoável e que eu conseguiria dar um início. Eles me deram uma bolsa de 50 por cento de desconto em todos os meus anos e na acomodação e foram anjos na minha vida. A única coisa era tirar meu visto de estudante antes de ir para a faculdade. Me mandaram pelo Correio cartas de recomendação, formulários, inscrições e fiz tudo que me cabia, legalmente, no Brasil para tirar esse visto de estudante. Fui ao consulado, tirei a foto, passei a minha impressão digital, só que na hora da entrevista o consulado negou meu visto de estudante e eu fiquei sem chão”. Em vão, tentou ainda outras duas vezes, em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro.

Foi um período muito difícil. Aos 19 anos, Renan tinha chegado tão perto de seu sonho e, de repente, a dura realidade gritava diante de si. Foi quando encontrou uma amiga que lhe contou ter retornado da Irlanda onde havia boa vontade com estudantes estrangeiros. De volta às pesquisas, Renan encontrou a primeira faculdade de teatro musical da Irlanda. E por pouco não ficou de fora.
Ao contatar a diretora, soube que não havia mais vagas naquele ano. Mas, pediu que lhe enviasse um material apresentando suas potencialidades. Com ajuda de um amigo, ele gravou um vídeo cantando e outro atuando em um monólogo. Surpreendentemente, a escola entrou em contato impressionada com seu talento: abria-se ali, as portas do novo mundo que sempre sonhou. E ele embarcou em seguida.
APRESENTAÇÕES
A vida na Irlanda é de muito estudo. A faculdade funciona em período integral e os alunos devem chegar de 30 a 45 minutos antes para o aquecimento vocal e corporal a fim de aguentarem a maratona das aulas. Nos finais de semana, Renan trabalha em uma loja de artigos para turistas o que lhe permite se manter, custeando a alimentação, transporte, aluguel e as viagens que faz pela Europa.
Faltando um ano para concluir a graduação, o mariliense se destaca por sua dedicação. Este ano, conquistou o Prêmio de Melhor Performance na premiação Dolly Kearns 2018 em Wexford. Mas, não para aí: recentemente, participou da turnê irlandesa do famoso tenor inglês Russel Watson, em Belfast, Dublin e Wexford como solista no musical “A Grand Night For Singing”.

E, como estudante na Irlanda, conseguiu o visto de turista para, finalmente, conhecer os Estados Unidos logo no primeiro ano, lugar que ele tem como objetivo final: “Meu sonho sempre foi e sempre vai ser a Broadway. É isso que eu quero. Meu plano, minhas aspirações, no final do quarto ano é que eu consiga gravar meu material e mandar para agentes nos Estados Unidos em Nova York para que consiga uma representação e dar entrada no processo de visto de artista, mudar para Nova York e começar a fazer audições ali”.
No ano que vem, Renan e sua turma se prepararão para um dia especial: “Temos uma grande produção. A faculdade compra os direitos autorais de um musical famoso e a gente faz no quarto ano, como turma, e ao final temos um show onde chamam produtores, diretores, agentes para poder vir na nossa faculdade e nós fazemos uma apresentação pequena para tentar nos vender como atores, cantores e dançarinos. Aí temos a oportunidade de os agentes nos representarem e nos venderem para fazer audições para musicais. Pode ser tanto em Londres, mais perto da gente, ou para os Estados Unidos, a Broadway”.
CHEGADA AO BRASIL
Há três anos sem ver a família, Renan, que é filho único, desembarca no Brasil no dia 13 de dezembro. Ele participará, em Marília, do novo espetáculo da Escola de Artes Batuke do Pé, no Teatro Musical, e ministrará seu primeiro workshop de canto e interpretação vocal, o “Worskshop EnCantando 2018”.
Ao encerrar a entrevista, o artista multifacetado fez questão de destacar a importância do Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus desde a infância: “O Colégio Sagrado foi um divisor de águas na minha vida porque mudou minha percepção de mundo. Eu descobri coisas que não sabia que existia, como aula de coral, de música, de inglês, educação religiosa, que era algo que me marcou muito e que eu lembro como muito carinho até hoje”.
Renan afirmou que considera “de extrema importância a educação musical. A educação de forma geral é muito importante. A educação musical é algo que muda vidas de forma muito latente. Então, lembro que uma das irmãs sempre reforçava esse dizer: quem canta reza duas vezes. A música é algo que toca o ser humano de uma maneira muito inexplicável”.
E finalizou: “Música é algo que forma caráter, que educa. Uma sociedade sem música, sem som, não consigo crer que dá para sobreviver num mundo assim. O mundo seria um lugar muito mais triste sem a música”.

WHEN THE SKY IS THE LIMIT: MARILIENSE OF SIMPLE ORIGIN
WINS OBSTACLES AND SHINES IN MUSICAlS IN EUROPE.

Moments before the curtains open, the concentration is vital to tame the anxiety and keep the breath under control. The theater bell rings for the third time and the heart goes off: the time has come. What seemed impossible for the simple-born boy, who listened to music on his mother's radio, materialized as if it were a prize for having defied all obstacles and overturned barriers across borders. Ladies and Gentlemen, with you, Renan Teodoro de Barros!
At age 23, he attends his third year of study at the BFA in Musical Theater at American College Dublin and is becoming part of the Irish history as the first Brazilian in a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater in that country. To reach Ireland, Renan faced every possible adversity. He never backed down for ever believing that he would get there, showing steadfast faith in the future.
To understand this story, you have to go back to his childhood. In an interview with Jornal da Manhã and the blog "Marília Sustentável", by videoconference, he spoke with pride about his origin, showing great gratitude to his parents and to all who helped him climb one step after another.
He said that his mother, Mrs. Cleide Barros, was hired to work in the nuns' residence of the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus when he entered the first grade of elementary school in public school. Two years later, in third grade, he earned a school scholarship where he remained until high school.
And it was at school that he had the first contact with music and dance, an experience that completely transformed him: "Since I was little, I always loved music. My father is very fond of music, my mother is passionate about music, radio. So, to this day, my mother and the radio have a love relationship. I always had a lot of music at home. I remember that music as an expressive art form, arrived for me really at school, in Sagrado. "
With unmistakable emotion, he recalled his first contact with the choir and the flute lessons: "Part of the activities was to go to choir classes together with teacher Patrícia Acosta, who is a vocal technique and an music teacher. All of us, at one point in the week, would go to choir class with Aunt Patricia. I remember arriving there and finding it incredible because she taught us about the musical notes and we were learning the flute. I found it incredible to learn the flute and the Titanic theme song and 'Ode a Alegria' that we learned on the flute. "
He went on with the memories: "We were learning to sing, the vocal division and so on. We sang at masses in the Chapel of Sagrado and I thought that was incredible because I found myself extremely special because I was participating in a performance. It was something that made me very happy to be performing in front of other people, even though at that time I was a very shy person. "
At school, very young, Renan also had contact with the English language which opened a new world of discoveries for him that began to study the language by watching films and listening to songs. With an above average ability to learn, he attended the Fisk English School and at age 12 had already graduated, coming to work as a teenager doing an internship, which guaranteed him the money he saved to fulfill the dream of studying outside Brazil.
AMERICAN DREAM
As the years passed, Renan focused on an ambitious goal: "My biggest dream has always been to live in the United States, that" American Dream, "and I thought of the way to do it. I realized that I needed to do a specific course to learn more about this art, to sing, to dance, to act, which is very popular outside Brazil and has been popularized in Brazil, especially in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Those cities have received many musicals. "
He said he wanted to "study in the United States and that's why I've changed my entire life. I started looking for musical theater colleges because Brazil itself does not have one, as far as I know. There are colleges of dramatic arts, which is more of an acting degree. Musical theater is the gathering of music, dance and acting. It is like a college for an acting preparation, but it also includes the major subjects of music and dance. "
As I said, this course "has the other kinds of subjects. When we receive the results, it comes: acting, music and dance and has the average among all subjects. It has the subject of acting, acting through song, music, vocal technique, dance. We do ballet, jazz, tap dance, contemporary among other styles. "
Renan Teodoro did not settle down and went for it: "I started to work teaching English and earning my money to enroll in music theater. I thought I'd work hard and be able to sign up. "
With a reasonable amount of money saved, he went on to the second step: locating overseas colleges and learning about the application process: "I researched good old friend Google and was filtering: Canada, the United States, England, New Zealand and Australia. I emailed all colleges asking how to apply, whether they accepted foreign students, what the fee would be, and everything. Strangely enough, I have passed all colleges. It gives me chills. It was something that was always such a dream and I always imagined it would be so far away. "
DISAPPOINTMENT
Determined, Renan recalled finding "a college in the United States that would have a more reasonable price and that I could get a start. They gave me a 50 percent discount in all my years and accommodation and were angels in my life. The only thing was to get my student visa before going to college. They sent me letters of recommendation, forms and I did everything legally in Brazil to take this student visa. I went to the consulate, I took the photo and my fingerprint, but at the time of the interview the consulate denied my student visa and I was left ungrounded. " In vain, he tried again twice, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
It was a very difficult time. At age 19, Renan had come so close to his dream, and suddenly the harsh reality screamed before him. That's when he met a friend who told him, she had returned from Ireland where there was goodwill with foreign students. Back in research, Renan found Ireland's first music theater college. And he was almost left out.
Contacting the director, he got to know that there were no more vacancies that year. But she asked him to send her some material showing his potential. With the help of a friend, a video of Renan’s singing was filmed and another one acting in a monologue. Surprisingly, the college contacted him impressed with his talent: it opened there, the doors of the new world he had always dreamed of. And he embarked then.
PRESENTATIONS
Life in Ireland is made of a lot of study and hard work. The college is full-time, and students are expected to arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes early for vocal and body warm-up in order to keep up with the class marathon. At weekends, Renan works in a tourist shop that allows him to keep up with the cost of food, transportation, rent and trips around Europe.
With one year left to complete graduation, Mariliense stands out for his dedication. This year, he won the Best Performance Award at the 2018 Dolly Kearns Award in Wexford. But also: recently, he participated in the Irish tour of the famous English tenor Russell Watson in Belfast, Dublin and Wexford and as a soloist in the musical "A Grand Night For Singing".
And as a student in Ireland, he got the tourist visa to finally visit the United States in the first year, which he has as his final goal: "My dream has always been and always will be Broadway. This is what I want. My plan, my aspirations, at the end of the fourth year is that I can record my material and send it to agents in the United States in New York so that I can get a representation and enter the artist visa process, move to New York and start auditions there. "
Next year, Renan and his group will prepare for a special day: "We have a great final year production. The college gets the rights of a renowned musical and we do it in the fourth year as a group, and at the end we have a showcase producers, directors, agents are invited to come to our college and we make a small presentation to try to sell ourselves such as actors, singers and dancers. Then we have the opportunity for agents to represent us and sell us to audition for musicals. It could be either in London, closer to us, or to the United States, to Broadway. "
ARRIVAL IN BRAZIL
For three years he has not seen his family, Renan, who is an only child, lands in Brazil on December 13th. He will participate in the new show of Batuke do Pé Escola de Artes e Sapateado in Marília, and will perform his first singing and vocal interpretation workshop, "Workshop EnCantando 2018".
At the end of the interview, the triple threat artist made a point of highlighting the importance of Sagrado Coração de Jesus to his childhood: "Colégio Sagrado was a watershed in my life because it changed my perception of the world. I discovered things I did not know existed, such as choir, music, English, religious education, something that marked me a lot and I remember it with dear affection until today. "
Renan said he considers "musical education of the utmost importance. Education in general is very important. Music education is something that changes lives in a very latent way. So I remember that one of the nuns always reinforced this saying: whoever sings, prays twice.
Music is something that touches the human being in a very inexplicable way. "
And he concluded: "Music is something that forms character, that educates. A society without music, without sound, I can not believe that I can survive in such a world. The world would be a much sadder place without music. "
